Making an oscar qualifying short within unprecedented conditions
Whirlpool examines the life of Helen Keller, an amazing woman who rose above the typical issues of the day, in part thanks to her unique abilities that come with her being deaf and blind. Shot in a style not traditionally used in period film. The filming focussed on experiencing Helen’s world through her own descriptions. Shot within 3 days of consecutive filming on 16mm Kodak film, after sourcing a 70+ member crew in 2 weeks - across 12 countries, where 51% of cast and crew were female and 88% dept heads were held by women or minorities. All while maintaining a budget of £15,000 while cost estimates were well above £100,000.
